About Belize

Located in Central America, Belize is a tropical country with a population of just under 400,000. With the Caribbean Sea to its East and verdant Maya Mountains to the West, Belize boasts everything from lush tropical rainforests and lowland savannas to blue coastal waters and sandy beaches.

The Belize & Sibun Rivers

The Belize River, winding through dense foliage before meeting the sea just north of Belize City, and the Sibun (Xibun) River, emerging from the headwaters of the Caves Branch River, emptying south of the City, both originating in the heart of the Maya Mountains, have both played crucial roles in Belize’s colorful history.

Once serving as the main route of travel for the ancient Xibun Maya, the Sibun River is now the perfect place for nature lovers looking to do some sightseeing. And so is the Belize River, which was an important part of the Mayan trade route, that became useful during the colonial era for logging and trade.

Travelers cruising down either rivers are granted the opportunity to take in the beauty of the lush riparian forest that runs along their banks and serves as habitats for a diverse array of flora and fauna native to Belize.

Manatees in Belize

Belize is home to an estimated population of between 800 to 1000 West Indian Manatees. The country is often referred to as one of the last strongholds for this now endangered species.

Weighing in at around 3000 lbs, these gentle giants—also commonly known as sea cows—are a sight to behold. They are most often found in shallow coastal waters, including the mouth of the Belize River.
